OEM buyers
You are building a product under your own industrial design and need a manufacturer who can hold the engineering, tooling and compliance together.

This page covers part of the programme sequence that runs from an idea to bulk goods: idea, 2D drawing, 3D modelling, sample, sample testing, custom packaging, bulk goods — 7 stages, of which the first three carry the expensive decisions. Tooling, SMT, assembly and safety testing are in-house; artwork, manuals and barcodes are packed where the destination-market rules are known.
- 7 stages from drawing to bulk goods
- 4 in-house capabilities — tooling, SMT, assembly, safety testing
- 6 quality gates before a container is sealed
OEM buyers
You are building a product under your own industrial design and need a manufacturer who can hold the engineering, tooling and compliance together.
IP handling, tooling ownership, design freeze discipline and a single point of contact across the programme.
What actually goes wrong in this route
The failure patterns are specific to the route, and they are cheaper to avoid than to fix.
How we structure a oem buyers programme
The terms, decided at the start rather than negotiated once something has already been spent.
| Element | How it is set |
|---|---|
| IP and confidentiality | NDA before technical review; ownership and handling terms explicit from the first drawing. |
| Design freeze | Cost input present during design. Specification changes after tooling are quoted as change requests. |
| Tooling | Ownership, maintenance and amortisation agreed before cutting, with storage location defined. |
| Certification | Scope agreed before testing, so the resulting report is usable in the destination market. |
| Management | One point of contact across design, tooling, compliance and production. |
| Documentation | Issued against the confirmed configuration, not regenerated per shipment. |
A range that usually works
Starting points rather than a fixed answer — the right range depends on your price ladder and your channel.
Single basket platform
The cheapest platform to bring up when the design is fully yours.
Coffee maker platform
A parts-intensive category with a different engineering profile.
Housing and basket parts
Reference points for what tooling complexity looks like in this category.
Test file structure
How a file is scoped, issued and matched to a destination market.
Second model on one platform
How a platform structure lowers the cost of the next SKU.
Full OEM / ODM route
The eight workstreams, four approvals and the commercial terms.
What to do in the first three moves
In order. Doing them out of order costs more than doing them slowly.
NDA before technical review
Confidentiality first. The design should not be opened technically before the terms exist.
Bring cost input into the design conversation
A design that meets the specification but not the cost target cannot be fixed after tooling. This is the single most expensive lesson in this route.
Agree tooling terms before cutting
Ownership, maintenance, amortisation and storage location. All four are cheap to agree now.
Where this route is the wrong fit
Said plainly, because the wrong programme is expensive in both directions.
You want a product developed without committing to a programme
Development consumes engineering time. It belongs inside a programme with a stated destination market and volume.
You expect to own tooling you have not funded
Tooling ownership transfers against tooling cost. The alternative is amortisation across the range.
You need the design kept confidential without an NDA
Confidentiality terms come first, in writing, before technical review.

OEM buyers — questions
How do you protect our design?
Confidentiality terms are agreed before technical review, and design ownership is explicit in the agreement.
Can we audit the process?
Factory visits are arranged around your programme review, and inspection milestones — including pre-shipment inspection — can be witnessed.
Who manages the programme?
One point of contact across design, tooling, compliance and production. The pieces are interdependent, so they are not split between suppliers.
What happens if we need a design change after tooling?
It is quoted as a change request with a cost and schedule impact. That is the main reason cost input belongs in the design conversation.
Can you produce to our test fixtures?
Yes. Custom fixtures and jigs are part of the NRE scope, and are usually cheaper when the range shares platforms.
How do you certify for our market?
Test scope is agreed before testing so the report is usable. Marks and registration are handled as tasks with their own lead times.
